Overall Purpose of the Role

The Protection Assistant is an integral part of the SDACKED (Supporting Displacement Affected Communities in Kenya with Entrepreneurship Development) project, a four-year initiative funded by Sweden. The primary role of the Protection Assistant is to provide day-to-day management and psychosocial support within the project framework. This includes addressing mental health needs of persons of concern (PoCs), implementing GBV prevention activities, and conducting protection monitoring. The role involves working closely with the Protection Officer to manage case documentation and ensure that all activities comply with donor requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Psychosocial Support and Case Management
    • Deliver professional and confidential protection and psychosocial services to survivors of GBV and other beneficiaries using a survivor-centered case management approach.
    • Conduct needs assessments and provide tailored support to individuals facing mental health challenges or trauma.
    • Ensure the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date case records and documentation.
  2. GBV Prevention and Awareness
    • Implement GBV prevention activities such as EMAP (Engaging Men through Accountable Practices) and other relevant tools.
    • Organize and conduct community sensitization sessions to raise awareness about GBV prevention and response.
    • Facilitate dialogue sessions and awareness campaigns to educate the community on ways to prevent and address SGBV.
  3. Identification and Referral
    • Identify individuals in extreme vulnerability and ensure they receive appropriate support from DRC or are referred to other service providers.
    • Coordinate with other actors to ensure comprehensive support for identified vulnerable persons.
  4. Mentorship Program Management
    • Play a key role in the mentorship program by identifying and training mentors and mentees.
    • Monitor mentor-mentee relationships, address any issues, and ensure effective capacity building for both mentors and mentees.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of mentorship training materials and activities.
  5. Project Documentation and Reporting
    • Assist in the design and development of sector concept notes and proposals.
    • Ensure timely submission of high-quality activity and donor progress reports, including case studies and human-interest stories.
    • Document project milestones and contribute to influencing impact and fundraising efforts.
  6. Protection Data Management
    • Support the collection, quality assurance, and analysis of protection data.
    • Maintain a reliable beneficiary database in accordance with data protection policies and guidelines.
    • Contribute to protection data reporting and analysis for internal and external stakeholders.
  7. Integration with Other Teams
    • Collaborate with the Economic Recovery, MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning), and Advocacy & Communications teams to enhance project integration.
    • Ensure that project strategies are well-coordinated and contribute to overall program goals.
  8. Core Humanitarian Standards (CHS) Compliance
    • Ensure that CHS principles are mainstreamed into day-to-day project implementation.
    • Promote adherence to CHS and support project activities in line with humanitarian standards.
  9. Collaboration and Coordination
    • Foster collaboration with other DRC sectors and Public Benefit Organizations (PBOs) to provide coordinated responses and support.
    • Maintain and strengthen networks with other service providers to ensure survivors receive quality services and support.
  10. Additional Duties
    • Assist the Protection Officer in project kick-off, reviews, closures, and external meetings as required.
    • Support the promotion of collaboration and synergy among supported entrepreneurs.
    • Undertake other duties as assigned by the Protection Officer and SDACKED Project Manager to meet project expectations.

Experience and Technical Competencies

  • Field Experience: Minimum of 2 years in protection, SGBV, psychosocial support, and social work programming within international PBOs or relevant agencies.
  • Project Management: Proven ability in managing multiple projects and locations, including implementing behavior change communication and community mobilization strategies.
  • Skills: Strong planning, organization, and problem-solving abilities. Experience in capacity building, training facilitation, and analytical report writing.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with county and national governments, donors, partners, local organizations, and other stakeholders.

Education

  • Degree: Bachelor’s in Sociology, Counseling and/or Psychology, Social Work.

Language Requirement

  • Proficiency: Fluent in written and spoken English, Swahili, and Somali.
